Metaphor

Ingemar Emanuelsson uses the picture below to capture the essence of inclusive education in order to make the concept clear. In this picture, in order to make justice in judgments, all animals are given the same task: 'Climb the tree'. It is obvious that this task does not adapt to each animal's needs and abilities, neither does it adapt to fair judgments. The challenge for a teacher in this situation is to provide adequate instructions so that everyone can learn and decide about what should be the goals to reach. This is the fundamental principle of inclusive education. A possibility for learning for each individual is a common goal; the tasks and results can be quite different. Still they can be worthwhile and fully appreciated.
